About Dark Circles
Dark circles are among the most common cosmetic concerns we see, and among the most misunderstood. They are rarely caused by lack of sleep alone. There are four main kinds: true pigmentation of the under-eye skin, thin skin that lets the blood vessels show through as a bluish tint, hollowing under the eye that casts a shadow, and darkening from allergy and constant rubbing.
Many people have a combination, which is why one cream rarely fixes them. - Stop rubbing your eyes and treat any allergy or dryness.
- Sleep with the head slightly raised if you wake with puffiness.

Dark Circles: Common Questions
Creams with vitamin C, kojic acid or retinol help pigmented dark circles when used consistently for several months with sunscreen. They do little for hollowing or vascular dark circles, which need different treatment.
It depends on the cause. Pigmented circles respond to peels and laser toning, hollowing responds to fillers, and allergic dark circles improve once the allergy is controlled. Many patients need a combination.
The tear trough is a delicate area, so filler is placed in small amounts by a doctor who knows the anatomy. Swelling or bruising for a few days is common, and the filler can be dissolved if ever needed.
Genetic pigmentation can be lightened but not erased, and hollowing returns as filler is absorbed over 9 to 12 months. We set these expectations clearly before treatment.
